The Xunta de Galicia and the University of Santiago (USC) presented the most ambitious project in history in favour of Galician. Its name is 'Nós', an initiative to place Galician alongside the most developed languages in the field of language technology and Artificial Intelligence. It is a project promoted by the Consellería de Cultura, Educación e Universidade, which will be carried out by CiTIUS (Centro Singular de Investigación en Tecnoloxías Intelixentes) and ILG (Instituto da Lingua Galega), in collaboration with AMTEGA (Axencia para a Modernización Tecnolóxica de Galicia).
Last Monday, 23rd May, the conference room of the Edificio Fontán (Cidade da Cultura) hosted the "Presentation Day of Proxecto Nós", a meeting in which the details of this strategic commitment of the Xunta de Galicia were exhibited to people and organisations, both public and private, who are interested in knowing the project and its evolution, or even in collaborating with Nós.
Nós is a project led by the Consellería de Cultura, Educación e Universidade and AMTEGA, which was entrusted to the University of Santiago de Compostela, which implements it through its “Singular Research Centre on Intelligent Technologies” (CiTIUS, Centro Singular de Investigación en Tecnoloxías Intelixentes) and “the Galician Language Institute” (ILG, Instituto da Lingua Galega), a research centre that has just celebrated half a century of life, researching in Galician linguistics and philology, as well as in language technology and its application to Galician.
The main objective of this project is to create the necessary resources to facilitate the development of services and products based on language technology (such as voice assistants, machine translators or conversational agents), which will also work in Galician thanks to the Nós project. At the same time, the Nós project also promotes the presence of Galician in the digital world, facilitating the creation of a wide variety of high quality tools and resources, which will be freely accessible by any person, institution, organisation or company interested in developing a technological product, application or service that incorporates Galician.
In addition to the leaders of the project (Consellería de Cultura, Educación e Universidade, USC and AMTEGA) and the Nós project team, the event was also attended by Cristina Gallach Figueres, special commissioner for the Alliance for the “New Language Economy of the Spanish Government” (Alianza por la Nueva Economía de la Lengua del Gobierno de España), and those responsible for the development of other similar projects in the other co-official languages of Spain.
